What is a corn maze?

A corn maze is a complex maze of corn stalks designed in an intricate web of pathways, tunnels and bridges. Many corn mazes are professionally designed prior to planting. Design companies are emerging that specialize in the design of corn mazes. Resourceful New England corn farmers first conceived of the idea to generate income and extend harvest season. In recent years, corn mazes may be found dotting the landscape of the northeastern states.

Each farm reflects its own personality in the creation if its corn maze. Mazes are created to spell out the names of towns. Others are configured in the shapes of cartoon characters. Still others have small mini-gardens in the center where tired navigators may sit and rest before proceeding further.

Corn mazes appear deceptively simple and easy to navigate at first glance. However, these sometimes giant mazes may be quite challenging to get through – particularly for adults. Children eight years old and older tend to have the easiest time navigating the mazes. Even with a map and clues to help find the way, many people end up going around in circles and being fooled by a never-ending procession of dead ends.

Most corn mazes offer amenities for families such as activities for small children, rest areas with benches and refreshments, guides, maps and direction assistance. Most mazes stay open through September and some until the end of October. As the weather becomes colder, the corn maze is plowed down and the earth cleared to make way for the next year’s planting season.

A corn maze adventure is the perfect family fun for all, promoting fresh air and an appreciation for nature.
