• Switchback Railway

  • This narrow-gauge gravity and mule-powered railway was built to haul coal and became one of America's leading tourist attractions ...second only to Niagara Falls. Today the tracks are long gone, the trees have grown back, and the trail has been turned into a National Historic Trail. The Switchback is an extremely pleasant 9-mile downhill ride that follows Mauch Chunk Creek and ends at the 19th Century Opera House in Jim Thorpe.
