Pennsylvania. The Ohiopyle
State Park covers about 20,000 acres of rugged P.A.outdoor
beauty and is the gateway to the Laurel Highlands Mountains. Most
visitors travel to Ohiopyle for the Youghigheny
River that passes through the park. The Yough
has some of the best whitewater rafting on the East coast. The
Youghigheny
River's twenty-foot fall marks the center point for most visitors
to the park, with the Laurel Highlands visitor center nearby.
During the Spring and Summer Ohiopyle Rafting companies are away's
looking to hire and train Whitewater
Raft guides.
Ohiopyle is the perfect Pennsylvania
vacation spot for Whitewater Enthusiasts. The Lower Yough, which
starts after the Ohiopyle Falls, is one of the coolest sections
of whitewater in the eastern United States. With many challenging
class III and IV rapids the seven mile stretch of river, to the
Bruner Run Take-Out, is a great Pennsylvania
family activity. The Youghigheny River Trail is fun for bikers
and a perfect place for hikers to watch the rafters take on the
rapids.
If mountain
biking is your sport, Ohiopyle has 27-miles of bike
and hike trails along the river and has been voted one of the
most beautiful area in the world by travel and leisure magazine.
The Elevations range from 980 feet, at the lower Yough river,
to almost 3000 feet at the top of Laurel Ridge. This difference
in elevation makes for a variety of climate and wildlife. Gateway
to the Laurel Mountains, Ohiopyle State Park prides itself on
preserving the Youghigheny
River Gorge. The "Yough" attracts outdoor people
from all over the East, including many whitewater
rafters, mountain bikers and rock
climbers.
