The
steep incline of the Allegheny Mountains was only half way resolved
by the Horseshoe
Curve. The Pennsylvania Railroad companies still needed
to blasted out the Gallitzin Tunnels under the Gallitzin Mountain.
The Gallitzin Tunnels is one of the highest and longest tunnels
in Pennsylvania. The Gallitzin Tunnels are so important to Pennsylvania
that in times of war they have been guarded by American troops.
The first tunnel was opened in 1851 and is known as the Portage
Tunnel. The second tunnel was opened in February 15, 1854 is
3,612 ft long at an elevation of 2,167 ft and is known as the
Allegheny Tunnel. The third tunnel was begun in 1902 and opened
in 1904 and is known as the Gallitzin Tunnel. The admissions
to Gallitzin Tunnel park is free. It is is good tourist attraction
by only worth about an hour of your day. Bring a lunch and enjoy
the view.
